Biography - George House

A native of North Carolina, George was born in Franklinton and lived there until the age of 9. After the death of his
father, George lived in the Methodist Orphanage in Raleigh, until he was 16 years old, at which time he returned to
Franklinton. George graduated from Franklinton High School in 1952, where he played and excelled in basketball and
baseball. Following high school, he received a scholarship to attend Edwards Military Institute in Salemburg, North Carolina.
In February 1953, George was drafted into the U. S. Army, serving as a Tank Commander in the 7th Army Tank Outfit.
While stationed in Germany, he played football for the 7th Army. George left the service as a Corporal in 1955.
Returning to North Carolina, he became a founder of the Franklinton American Legion Post 52. George transferred his
membership in 1969 to the American Legion Post 1 in Raleigh, where he became a lifetime member. He has served the
American Legion in many capacities, holding the positions of Commander (1974), 1st Vice Commander, Sergeant-At-Arms,
and Director-At-Large. George has held the position of 2nd Vice Commander since the 1970’s. He is a lifetime member of
AMVETS Post 635 and has been a member of The Forty and Eight since 1970.
George was employed with Westinghouse Electric Corporation from 1955 until his retirement in 1990. He has been married
to Pat House since 1957, and they have one daughter and two grandchildren. Both George and Pat are members of the
St. James United Methodist Church.
