Veterans, You May Now Salute Your Flag

Many veterans are not aware of the change, but there has been a significant shift in the law regarding saluting Old Glory.

Veterans and military personnel can now salute the flag whether they are in uniform or not, according to a relatively new act passed by Congress.

"During the ceremony of hoisting or lowering the flag or when the flag is passing in a parade or in review, all persons present in uniform should render the military salute," states the new law passed in January.

Members of the Armed Forces and veterans who are present but not in uniform may now render the military salute; this was signed into law this year in the 2008 National Defense Authorization Act.

When the flag passes, the law states, all other persons present should face the flag and stand at attention with their right hand over the heart or, if applicable, remove their hats or headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, with the hand over the heart.

Citizens of other countries present should stand at attention.

If you wish to see the summary or full text of the Law, click on the Link below. The text is in Section 594 of the bill on the bottom of page 138.

Legionnaire of the Year

On July 10, 2008, Mike Clement was selected as the "Legionnaire of the Year" for outstanding service in promoting the goals and ideals of the American Legion.

Under Mike's direction, the hall floor was renovated and restored to its former splendor. The renovation saved the post thousands of dollars in contractor fees and has once again made the hall floor a premier feature of the post.

It is important that Post 1 reflect a positive image and the hall floor renovation reflects pride, comradeship and unity among the members of Post 1. Mike spent several months leading the restoration project and numerous hours repairing damage after the renovation was complete.

Therefore, it is with great pride that Mike Clement is named 2008 "Legionnaire of the Year."
